Tall Can’s pilostyles wildflower is undoubtedly one of the year’s most enjoyable rap projects.
pilostyles wildflower is an album by Tall Can, produced by Christian Molenaar. The album reportedly comes after a six-year production period, the bulk of which Tall Can spent behind bars.
Rapping over surf rock? For an album recorded over six years ago, that’s quite visionary, in my opinion. I can’t really tell the lyrics apart from each other—partly because of the fuzziness of the mic, which I like very much—but everything on this track just flows well. It has an irresistible disjointedness to it that if it doesn’t have you hooked on the very first listen will have you considering a replay. Sure, modest chaos over surf-rock instrumentals isn’t anything particularly new—we heard a lot of this even over ten years ago on the likes of Ariel Pink’s Pom Pom—but it’s rather refreshing to experience it in the rap scene. I love this opener in ways I can’t even put to paper—or website.
Damn! I love that the surf-rock samples continue to serve as the instrumental. The rapping is still great. Awesome follow-up overall.
Solid rapping over surf-rock-sample production once again. Nothing to hate here.
The album’s punching on still with this. Some color is added with the retro spaceship noise samples. Over the quality still slaps, but the energy could be a mini-pinch higher.
Though one of the shorter tracks, “Sleeping Giant” is a clear standout on the project.
Energy’s maintained well enough with this track.
For a generally fast-paced project, some of its brighter moments appear to come from its slower moments like “mr. peanuts.”
The boat is sailing just fine with this track. Once again, there’s nothing to hate thus far.
At this point, I’m just snapping and bopping my head along. I’m sure you will be too.
Half track, half sample.
“On this planet, not many give a fuck!” This track features one of the more stable performances, but it doesn’t take from the niche sample-rap appeal of the overall project. It’s all just another enjoyable moment on this project.
Lovely hip-hop track overall.
Intense!
Groovy sample supporting the vocals on this one.
One thing I love is the peaceful transition between production styles. How did we start with a foray a surf-rap tracks and land right into gangster-rap territory? The album has continually failed to disappoint.
Oh yeah! No room for last-minute disappointments—the energy is still going strong.
Oh, Hell has broken open! Just when I had the temptation to think we’d finally get a breather on the closer, the album goes all fucking out! Easily the best production on the entire album.
Oh wow! I definitely recommend giving this a listen. Are you kidding? Sheesh! Awesome work from Tall Can and Christian Molenaar.
