Alex G’s “June Guitar” is a refreshing and peaceful way to open an album.
“June Guitar” is one of the singles and the opening track from Alex G’s Headlights album. The single was released in June before the album’s July release.
I love the way the opening chords on this track shower your ears with unmatched tranquility, akin to some of the pre-MAGA-adjacent Eric Clapton tracks from the 1990s. The track overall oozes pleasurably with that vibe. The writing is good as well. And instrumentally, we get some horns and accordions that take up the parts of the track where the vocals go quiet.
Overall, it’s a good track. I wish it did a bit more, though. Maybe he could’ve added a bit of choir swell at the end, or am I craving Sufjan Stevens now? I haven’t much complaint about the track. I recommend giving this a listen if you’ve heard hits like “Change the World” or some of Sufjan’s work from the 2000s and you want something a little more minimal.
